Helene Oliver Says Good-Bye
After working in the photo industry in San Diego
for over 20 years and Giant Photo Service for 12, I have to
say good-bye. My husband and I are headed for Maryland. We
are ready to explore the eastern US, experience changing seasons
and be close to our children and grandchildren.
As I write this letter, after just
turning 50, I feel excited to be starting out on a new
adventure in my life. It has
been a rich and rewarding time in this wonderful not so little
anymore beach town. 20 years ago we were making photographs
from film, marveling at the newest and greatest 800 and 1000
speed films. Now we are marveling at the new 14 megapixel
digital cameras and PhotoShop CS. Changes have been a part
of my life and now I’m ready to embrace another one.
The East Coast will be a BIG change for this California Girl.
I hope to take it on exploring and visiting new cities and
regions. And I guess I’m going to have to put away
my shorts and t-shirts, at least for part of the year. Helping
me with these changes will be my family. I will relish the
chance to watch my grandchildren grow and get a great kick
out of watching my kids dealing with parenthood.
I’m also feeling sad. I’ve
watched San Diego change and grow and been a part of the
Downtown evolution,
from the building of Horton Plaza to PetCo Park. Now we have
a new Downtown with the residential towers being built and
the upcoming development of the old San Diego Police Station
area. I will miss being a part of that growth. San Diego
has become my home.
Most of all I’m going to miss the people, my friends
and colleagues in the photo world. I have met and worked
with so many wonderful interesting people in San Diego. I
will miss that interaction the most. Many of you I’ve
known since the Color Craft and Chrome days, some I’ve
met since working with Alfred and Sue at Giant Photo. Old
Friends and new friends alike, I will value all of my memories.
As I go on to a new part of my life I want to thank all
of you for making my life experience richer for knowing you.

With Fond Memories,
Helene Oliver
